RA focuses on outset DJ seminars with Berlin radio station Refuge Worldwide

By News No Comments

A year of free monthly DJ seminars will be held by RA and Berlin radio station Refuge Worldwide. RA will offer beginning DJ courses at Refuge Worldwide’s studio and community space on Weserstraße in Neukölln, Berlin, for the next 12 months. The next will occur on August 9th, and subsequent ones will take place on chosen Mondays each month.

The sessions will begin with a lesson led by an experienced DJ, followed by open deck times for students to experiment. CCL, rRoxymore, Call Super, Sally C, Nick Höppner, and Sky Deep will be the first six mentors. The last six will be revealed later this year.

The program, which was created as part of Refuge Worldwide’s continuing collaboration with Open Music Lab, is now taking applications—minority and marginalized groups will be given priority. Femme Bass Mafia will give a basic tutorial on DJing before the seminars. Covid-19 limitations will apply to the course dates.

Nostromo festival has announced a lineup of 120 artists for its September edition

By News No Comments

Based on the success of their last OFF-festival edition in July, Nostromo has planned an even larger festival in September, lasting four days from September 16th to September 20th.

The French ensemble has a history of hosting spectacular parties. Their event curation has been essential to France’s developing scene over the previous four years. Deep-dive DJs are frequently invited to unexpected parties, typically in secret places with superior sound systems.

The event will be hosted one hour outside of Paris, in the beautiful castle grounds of Château De Motteux, a 16th-century building, as it was in July. Music goes from Thursday through Monday without a pause, according to a holy 24-hour license.

Next month, the Nostromo team will welcome over 120 musicians distributed over 5 stages: all kinds of music will be represented, from house to minimal, techno to even harder techno, as well as ambient, downtempo, and experimental.

The activities will begin with an opening performance, which will also be ATOM TM’s only event in Europe this year, as well as OCB aka Driss Beniss LIVE, and Carl Finlow LIVE. Showcases from Uruguay’s Phonoteque, a stage hosted by Dure Vie with Octave One as a special guest, the Rinse stage with Francois X and Bjarki live, and the boiling Cartulis + Lumbago stage with Binh as a headlining act are also on the agenda.

Many magical moments may be expected during the weekend, given the attention paid to artist selection, gorgeous natural locations, and extended performances from prolific DJs. Over the four days, camping is free, with the opportunity to upgrade to one of a selection of deluxe tipi tents that are ready to go on site.

Follow the event on Facebook and purchase tickets here.

Frankie Knuckles’ record collection is on exhibit in New York

By News No Comments

The artwork, presented by Chicago artist Theaster Gates as part of a group show called Social Works, includes 5,000 recordings from Frankie’s collection. Among the pieces on display are test and promo pressings from Knuckles’ heyday, as well as comments from pals like Danny Tenaglia.

Tenaglia wrote on printing of his 1995 album Hard & Soul, “Frankie, not only is it my joy to know you personally, but it’s a pleasure to be able to let you know how much you inspire me.”

Russell E.L. Butler is also digitizing Knuckles’ collection for preservation purposes.

Knuckles, dubbed “the godfather of house music,” was a house DJ and producer who helped popularize the genre in its early phases.

Check out some of the installation’s recordings and learn more about the exhibit here.
