Showcase by Spotify allows artists to feature on the app’s homescreen, giving their music that much-desired moment in the spotlight. However, as excitement brews over this new opportunity, some artists are expressing concerns about the financial implications.

Spotify’s Showcase: Artists can pay to show their songs on the app Homescreen

Showcase, a new payola?

Showcase, described by Spotify as a ‘campaign tool to give your music its moment,’ is changing the game for artists. It’s available to any artist with at least 1,000 monthly streams and offers budgets starting at $100. These campaigns run until the budget is exhausted or for a maximum of two weeks after they begin. The cost-per-click (CPC) model, starting at $0.40, determines how your budget is spent. This means you could potentially get around 250 plays for your promoted song with a $100 budget. However, it’s worth noting that during this time, listeners might explore more of your catalog and become fans.

The downside

While Showcase opens doors to prime real estate on Spotify’s homescreen, some artists are questioning its true value. It’s known that Spotify pays around $0.003 to $0.005 per stream, which means that the new feature Showcase costs around 100 times more than the royalties an artist earns per stream. This significant contrast has raised concerns about the tool’s viability in generating income for musicians.

Shifting priorities

Critics argue that Showcase represents a shift away from Spotify’s personalized user experience model, which includes features like Discover Weekly and DJ-designed playlists aimed at offering unique listening experiences. Artists paying to feature prominently on the platform might alter the dynamics of musical discovery on Spotify.

This isn’t the first time Spotify has introduced artist-payment models. Earlier in 2023, they launched Discovery Mode, allowing artists to opt-in but relinquishing 30% of their royalty rate. These moves come in the wake of Spotify’s decision to increase subscription fees, accompanied by promises of delivering more value to artists.

In conclusion

Spotify’s Showcase is undoubtedly a groundbreaking opportunity for artists to gain visibility on one of the world’s largest streaming platforms. However, it has ignited a debate within the music community about the true cost of such visibility. As artists grapple with the financial implications, it remains to be seen how Showcase will shape the future of music promotion and whether it will truly give artists the moment they desire on the homescreen.
